As usual, they continued the lobby, commenced at Visiting Day last week, to have their 3 week stay extended to the entire 7 week session. Little cried real tears while hugging the counselors goodbye! And the first thing out of Big's mouth, as usual, was "Three weeks is just not long enough." They rode, they climbed, they fished, they played crazy all-camp color wars, plus rock climbing, sailing and swimming. I can see WHY they would want to go 7 weeks-- it is everything that every child should be doing all summer. No TV, no computer, no video games- just the outdoors and friends. What could be better? Two things hold me back-- whether I could mentally handle not seeing them for 7 weeks with only two visiting days, and of course, $$$$$$$$$$. We are talking over $13,000 total, and coupled with private school tuition, it's not a reality. I guess that's hard to contemplate when you're 11and 8. This year was extra special for Little as he won the coveted "Honor Camper" award- the highest award in all of camp.
And Big is half way to becoming a 46er- someone who climbs the 46 highest mountains in New York State. Pretty cool.
As much as I love to have them home, the first day back can be a bit dicey. For starters, they are EXHAUSTED. And both have different ideas of what to do when exhausted-- for example, one wants to go out to lunch, and one wants me to make him an egg sandwich. The jury is still out as to the winner.
As for me, last night I froze 9 more pounds of organic blueberries that I picked yesterday and made another batch of Spiced Vanilla Plum Jam. Today's jobs include freezing a bushels of broccoli and green beans, some corn, and canning tomatoes. Wonder if I am up for all that??
