School and Camp

Yesterday Big and I went for an official meeting at NCS, a local private middle school. LOVED IT. I get the sense that he felt very at home there as well, but he is reluctant to leave his school, as any 10 year old would be. Still, it felt like a community and it felt like learning was paramount, not weird, pointless rules. I felt that he would feel safe there and that he could learn a lot, both socially and academically. Fun to see hear that he was excited for a "hard" math class, and see that he was graphing equations. Delicious lunch, and good conversations with Admissions, Assistant Dean of Students and the Headmaster.

After we returned home, we packed up to head to Poko for the Patch Sprint. I was pretty tired, and Andrew had to work, so the boys and I were solo. They (particularly Big) were brutal in the car, and on the ride over, I wondered if I had made a bad move. But being there- it is so clear that THAT is a place where Big feels safe. He and Little were on best behavior- it was an early summer night of tether ball, street hockey, soccer and reading in our cabin- just the 3 of us. Good stuff. Today's hike brought out a darker side in Big- his real issues- and I truly wish that I had composed myself better instead of losing my shit the way he lost his.....but in the end, he pulled it together and finished in fine form with good attitude. After a yucky night's sleep (awakened at 2am by late arrivals to the Farmhouse and a board-like bed), I am drained. We arrived home in time to scoot out to DONNELLY'S for my first cone of '09. How crazy to think that last year at this time, I ran out. Maybe that will be my Labor Day goal. Red Raspberry, mmmmm. It was an enjoyable ride both ways, despite not much sun, and we saw the Holmes outside their new E&V shop so stopped to chat. Now inside reading on my bed with Denali --"Nantucket Nights"-- a perfect trashy, summer read, while the Yankees play in the living room. The weather is 70 degrees- which is alternatingly too cool or quite beautiful, depending on the cloud coverage-- which is thick at the moment.

So far this weekend, I have done some very good living in the moment living.....halfway through this 4 day long weekend. I'm so into this weekend, that I have almost forgotten that work will come again on Tuesday-- which is probably very healthy for a change.
